About This Course

The course deals with introduction to the underlying principles and applications of the emerging field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Intended for a multidisciplinary audience with a variety of backgrounds. Introduces tools and principles relevant at the nanoscale dimension. It also familiarizes with characterization techniques. Some applications in the area of chemical engineering are discussed. It also discusses current and future nanotechnology applications in engineering, materials, physics, chemistry, biology, electronics and energy.

Dr. Sonal Mazumder

Dr. Sonal Mazumder is Assitant Professor of chemical engineering at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, Pilani campus in Rajasthan, India. Prior to her appointment at BITS, she completed her PhD in VirginiaTech (2013), United States in Macromolecular Science and Engineering. She obtained her B.Tech in Chemical Engineering (2006) from West Bengal University of Technology and M.Tech in Nanoscience and Technology (2008) from Jadavpur University at Kolkata, West Bengal. During this tenure, she has gained extensive research experience. She has several first author papers in reputed journals and she has presented both in national (Chemcon, Indian Science Congress, Indian Chemical Society, Chemozale) and international conferences (Nanomanufacturing NUS-MIT Singapore, American Chemical Society National Meeting, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, IUPAC, ASME in United States, Combustion in China). Dr. Mazumder is a member of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE), American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Materials Research Society (MRS) and American Association for Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). She also served at various leadership positions and received several honors and awards for her outstanding achievements.

Do I need to buy a textbook?

Class lectures will cover most of the topics. However, the following textbook may be referred for the beginners. Guozhong Cao, Nanostructures and Nanomaterials : Synthesis, Properties and Applications, Imperial College Press 2004.
